Frequently Asked Questions

Will therapy “fix” me?

Therapy offers the opportunity for healing and repair. It is not about fixing but about learning effective tools, gaining insight and awareness, and growing in ways that allow you to show up for yourself.

What can I expect in my first session?

The first session is usually an intake or assessment. Your clinician will meet with you and try to get a better understanding of what you’re struggling with and what you’re looking for. It is also a good time to see if you feel comfortable with your clinician.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes with a few exceptions.
Clinicians are required by law to break confidentiality if  you are in danger of harming yourself or others or there is suspected child, elder, or dependent adult abuse. Also, clinicians have to break confidentiality if the court subpoenas records.

Will my family or employer find out I am in therapy?

Only if you provide written consent. Clinicians cannot share information without your permission, including acknowledging you as a client.

How often do I need to go to therapy?

This depends on your needs. Your clinician and you can decide together what is most effective and realistic for you. Some people go weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. The frequency can change over time.

How do I know if my therapist is a good fit?

A good therapist makes you feel heard, respected, and safe. It is okay to switch therapists if it does not feel like the right fit. Therapy is a personal process.
